Nexplanon® Insertion: COVID-19

COVID-19: Contraception - Re-introduction of Subdermal Implant (Nexplanon®) Insertion for At Risk Groups
For information: General Practices

KEY POINTS:

  • Sandyford has re-introduced subdermal implant (SDI) fitting for those individuals who have been assessed as being at risk of unplanned pregnancy due to clinical need or vulnerability
  • This group includes: people under 25 years; those within one year of childbirth or abortion; those in whom any other method is unsuitable
  • Following Faculty of Sexual & Reproductive Health (FSRH) Guidance HERE, expired implants should not be removed if this appears difficult or will add significant face-to-face time with the client
  • In these circumstances, the implant can safely remain in situ and a new implant can be inserted in the other arm. Women are advised to contact the service at a future time when services are fully available

Until further notice, Sandyford will provide a limited service during the COVID-19 pandemic. The following services will continue:

  • Emergency contraception: phone 0141 211 8130 for advice
  • Abortion (with home medication delivered to patients): phone 0141 211 8620 for advice
