Tiotropium for asthma

Tiotropium has been added to the Adult Total Formulary as add on treatment in adult asthmatic patients at step 4 with poorly controlled asthma (at least one course of oral steroids for a severe exacerbation in the last year) who have persistent airflow obstruction (post bronchodilator FEV1 of less than 80% of that predicted). It is restricted to initiation by clinicians experienced in the management of asthma. Inhaler device guides for asthma and COPD have been published.

The Respiratory MCN are producing prescribing summaries for the Formulary products for respiratory disease. These will be launched shortly and include more information on use of tiotropium in asthma. An alert with links will follow.
