Medicine Shortages

Shortages and discontinuations of medicines is an ongoing issue. The picture can change very quickly and different levels of stockholding in different pharmacies can mean one pharmacy reporting a shortage, while others may have sufficient stock. This makes it very difficult to quickly and accurately reflect the situation.

In acute and mental health hospitals, the pharmacy teams receive regular updates of shortages and potential replacements. Community Pharmacy Scotland provide updates on their website for both generic and banded shortages . For GP practices, ScriptSwitch® is updated to provide messages where possible.

For more information on any specific shortages, please discuss with your local clinical pharmacy team or community pharmacist.

Current issues include shortages of valsartan and Creon® 40000 for which previous advice still stands.
