Nystatin Dose Clarification

Nystatin Dose Clarification

In 2016, the dose of nystatin oral suspension was increased in the print issue of BNF 72 (Sept 16 – March 17) and in the BNF for Children (BNFC) 2016-2017. The dose change was in line with the Nystan® Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC), however, this did not reflect the lower dosing recommendations for generic nystatin products.

Since then, there have been further discussions with the MHRA. In March 2017, the recommended dose in the online versions of the BNF and BNFC, as well as the Nystan® SPC was changed back to the original dose. The current online BNF dose is:

Nystatin for oral candidiasis

By mouth

Child: 100 000 units 4 times a day usually for 7 days, and continued for 48 hours after lesions have resolved

Adult: 100 000 units 4 times a day usually for 7 days, and continued for 48 hours after lesions have resolved.

Please refer to the nystatin SPCs or the online version of the BNF / BNFC for full up to date dosing advice.
