Blood Glucose Meters

The Formulary for Blood Glucose Meters and Test Strips was launched in March 2016 and has been implemented across NHSGGC for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Any patient with type 1 diabetes who uses a combined meter to test for ketones and blood glucose should continue on that meter. These patients should have the facility to test for ketones when unwell or blood glucose is high as advised by their diabetes team and should not be switched to a meter which only measures blood glucose.

If a clinician within acute services is recommending that a patient needs a meter which is not on the preferred list, they must provide the rationale if it has characteristics that would specifically benefit the patient, eg ability to test ketones. Without this explanation GP practices are likely to implement the preferred list choices.
