Antibiotics: Public Understanding

As part of the European Antibiotic Awareness Day, the Glasgow North East Prescribing Team ran a stall in Easterhouse Shopping Centre with quizzes on appropriate antibiotic use. The intention was to gauge public knowledge and awareness around appropriate antibiotic use.

  • 71 people completed the questions (77% female; 59% 30-59yrs)
  • 64% answered all five questions correctly
  • 13% (1 in 8) thought an antibiotic was required to get better from a ‘cough, cold, or mild sore throat’
  • 21% (1 in 5) thought they should make an appointment with their GP if they had a cough, cold or sore throat for a few days (most common incorrect answer)

Although numbers were small, this data reinforces the need to continue educating the public on self-management and the natural duration of self-limiting respiratory tract infections.
