Access to the British National Formulary and British National Formulary for Children

The BNF and BNFC publications are available either electronically or as a printed book version.  The preferred method of accessing the BNF is electronically as content is updated monthly.

Electronic access to the BNF and BNFC?
You can access the electronic versions via Medicines Complete https://www.medicinescomplete.com/mc/. A direct link is also available on the Clinical Info page of StaffNet.  BNF and BNFC Apps are available from the App Store or Google Play. (An Athens password is required; visit http://www.knowledge.scot.nhs.uk/  to register for an Athens password).

Hard copies of BNF and BNFC
The paper BNF is updated and printed twice yearly in March and September while the BNFC publication is printed annually in September.  Until now eligible healthcare professionals across NHS Scotland have been issued with a paper BNF every March and September and a BNFC in September.  This changed in September 2015 and now eligible healthcare professionals will only receive a new hard copy of both the adult BNF and BNFC annually in September.  Community pharmacy contractors will, however, continue to receive a hard copy of the adult BNF in both March and September.  Other than frequency of issue, arrangements for distribution of paper copies will remain as before.
