European Antibiotic Awareness Day: 18th November

The World Health Organization estimates that antibiotics treatments add an average of 20 years to all of our lives. But in the 80 years since the discovery of penicillin, our overuse of antibiotics has lead to the emergence of untreatable superbugs that threaten the basis of modern medicine. European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) takes place every year on 18th November and aims to highlight the issue of antimicrobial resistance.

What can I do to support EAAD and the responsible use of antibiotics?

The Antibiotic Zone for Primary Care

In the ever-evolving race against antibiotic resistance, it can be hard for healthcare professionals to keep up with the latest evidence and best practice relevant to their patients. The Antibiotic Zone is a two-week online event between 16th and 27th November, allowing primary healthcare professionals (GPs, district nurses, dentists, and so on) to directly question experts in the field. Running from European Antibiotic Awareness Day (November 18th) to November 27th, the award winning I’m a Scientist Antibiotic Zone will allow primary healthcare professionals (including GPs, district nurses, dentists) to put questions directly to experts in the field.

Questions can be submitted through the website at any time, and for an hour each evening there will also be 'live chats', where experts and primary healthcare professionals can hold real time discussions. Experts confirmed so far include Dr Cliodna McNulty, Head of Public Health England Primary Care Unit, and Professors of Primary Healthcare Research Prof Michael Moore, Prof Alistair Hay, Prof Christopher Butler, Prof Paul Little. Experts are being recruited to answer questions on nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, epidemiology, and lab tests. The event is free to take part in, with no ongoing commitment. Funding is provided by the Wellcome Trust.
